Ruby Moritz-Cammack 2022-2025
“I first started coxing at the age of 12 at The Grange School and what began as trying something new quickly turned into one of the biggest parts of my life! I’ve always been outgoing and extremely competitive, so I immediately fell in love with the challenge of coxing and the unique responsibility of a cox, especially with being able to bring my own personality into the boat.
I chose Newcastle University specifically because of its reputation as one of the top rowing universities in the UK and looking back, joining NUBC will always be one the best decisions I have ever made. During my three years at Newcastle, I was fortunate to be a part of some incredible crews, reaching the final at Henley Women’s Regatta, qualifying for Henley Royal Regatta, winning BUCS medals and of course, winning both the women’s and overall VL in 2025. However, some of my absolute favourite memories come from the everyday training sessions and spending time with teammates that very quickly became my best friends for life.
NUBC taught me so much more than just how to be a better cox. It pushed me outside my comfort zone, developed my confidence and leadership skills and taught me how to motivate and bring together different personalities to achieve a common goal. Being surrounded by such hardworking and driven athletes every day inspired me to constantly push myself and aim higher.
After graduating from Newcastle in 2025, I was fortunate enough to receive a full ride scholarship to continue my coxing career at the University of Kansas. I am now the coxswain of the Women’s Varsity 8+ and in my first year I was honoured to be named to the All-Big 12 team and receive Coxswain of the Year. I genuinely believe I would not be where I am today without the experiences, opportunities and support I received from everyone at NUBC. The club gave me the confidence and foundations to take my coxing to the next level and pursue opportunities I never imagined when I first started university!
I could not recommend NUBC enough as a rower or a cox. Whether you are an experienced rower or completely new to the sport, it’s an amazing opportunity to challenge yourself, be part of something bigger and make friends for life. The early mornings and freezing cold sessions are definitely more than worth it for the memories, achievements and friendships that come with them. Although my rowing journey has now taken me across to the U.S., I will always be proud to have been part of NUBC and I’ll always be a blue star!”
