FISU World University Games

Newcastle sent six athletes, and coach, Alex Leigh, to compete at the World University Games. Holly Youd and Tia Lenihan were selected to race in the Women’s Eight; Rachel Bradley was selected to race in the Women’s Double Sculls; and Holly Youd was also selected to race in the Women’s Four. Ben Brockway, Lucas Bowes, and Ted Ridley were selected to race in the Men’s Eight.

On the Friday, all boats raced in heats, with the Women’s and Men’s Eights, and the Women’s Four winning their heats to progress directly to the A finals on the Sunday. The Women’s Double came second in their heat, and made their way to the A/B 1 Semifinal on the Saturday.

The Women’s Double then went on to win the A/B 1 Semifinal to progress to the A final on the Sunday.

On the Sunday, with all of our boats in A finals, the Women’s Eight won gold by three seconds, the Men’s Eight won gold by two seconds, and the Women’s Four won gold by three seconds. The Women’s Double missed out on medalling by three seconds, placing fourth.

Well done to Alex Leigh, and all athletes involved, we are very proud of their achievements!
