Confirmed continued Performance Sport Support for Rowing

Newcastle University Boat Club (NUBC) is extremely pleased to announce the commitment made by Newcastle University to maintain Performance Sport status and funding for a further three years. This decision has been made following a review by the University, in which all 60+ sports were assessed based on their achievements and contributions to Team Newcastle. Six sports, including Rowing, were selected to receive access to Newcastle’s world class facilities, investment in professional coaching and financial support over the next three years.

Within this review, recent competitive performances and the overall contribution to the University were evaluated. As a flagship sport at Newcastle, Rowing yields a large proportion of Team Newcastle’s BUCS points and has consistently delivered wins in the Victor Ludorum at both BUCS Head and Regatta over a number of years. The club also represents the University at national and international competitions outside of BUCS, with strong performances at events such as the Head of the River Races, Henley Women’s Regatta and Henley Royal Regatta.

Recognised as a GB Rowing High-Performance Centre, NUBC not only succeeds in competition as a club, but also provides professional coaching, robust governance and comprehensive athlete development structures. This environment supports the progression of individual athletes and alumni who advance to international representation, including World Championship and Olympic pathways.

This announcement was welcomed by the Trustees and Alumni of the Boat Club, as it ensures long-term stability and continued support for the programme. Commenting on the news, alumnus Stan Cannons, President of the Blue Star Club and Trustee for the Blue Star Foundation, said: “Newcastle University Boat Club has demonstrated sustained excellence over a number of years, supported by strong leadership, coaching, and athlete commitment. The decision to extend performance sport support reflects both competitive results and the broader value the club brings to the University community.”

As a club that balances elite performance with academic progression, the renewed support is vital in retaining coaching expertise and maintaining high performance standards. Building on the legacy created by alumni, NUBC aims to continue inspiring current and future students to perform at the highest level both on and off the water.

Thanks to this renewed three-year commitment, the Boat Club can now plan with confidence, invest in athlete development and continue to represent Newcastle University at the pinnacle of university and elite rowing.
