Scottish Rowing Championships
This weekend, NUBC sent four crews to sunny Strathclyde to compete at Scottish Rowing Championships. Two women’s eights and two men’s eights took to the water to come up against top Scottish and Northern Universities.
Women’s First Eight
Dominating their Semi-Final ahead of the field by nearly ten seconds, they progressed directly to the Final. Coming up against local rivals, Tyne Amateur, Durham University, and even NUBC’s Second Eight, this eight led the race from the first stroke to become the winners of the Women’s Championship Eights.
Men’s First Eight
In a straight final against the likes of Tyne Amateur, Durham University and St Andrew’s Boat Club, the Men’s First Eight faced the rougher conditions Sunday had to offer. After a fast start they held second amongst the field through the 500 metre marker. From the 500, the cross wind picked up and they fought to remain in contention for a medal, but got overtaken by St Andrews in the last 500 metres to place fourth.
Women’s Second Eight
This Eight placed second in their Semi-Final, leading them to the Final against the First Eight and other competing boats. In the Final, they set off in the midst of the field, and held their position until the last 50 metres, where they managed to overtake Durham University to place fifth.
Men’s Second Eight
Another crew in a straight final, this eight came up against two quads and two eights. Leading the field from the start line and holding this lead to the finish, they came away with Gold in Open Intermediate Eights.
A solid weekend of racing leading to two gold medals and valuable racing experience!
