Durham Regatta
Durham regatta was a very successful weekend for Newcastle, and a good race to build on training for Henley and Henley Women’s.
On the Saturday, the first eight won the Elite Eights “A” Category, beating the likes of Durham University and Tyne Amateur Rowing Club. The Second Eight beat York University in the heat, and then went on to be beaten by Durham in a close race. The third eight, which was a mixed eight between parts of the senior men’s squad, and the novice men and women, was beaten by Durham University in the first round. The Open Elite “A” Coxed Four beat the likes of Collingwood College and Durham University and to win the Corporation Cup.
On the Sunday, the Open Championship coxed four went on to win the Grand Challenge Cup, beating Durham University in the final. The Women’s Non-Championship A eight won the William E Neesham Bowl after beating the likes of South College, Durham Amateur Rowing Club and St Cuthberts in some of the most exciting races of the day. The Open Championship first eight beat Durham University’s second eight in their first round, but then was beaten by Durham University’s first eight in their second round. The Open Championship Second Eight went straight through to the quarter finals after their first race was scratched, facing Durham where they lost by 1 length. The Open Championship third eight, again made up of a mixture of the senior men’s squad and novice men and women, was beaten by Durham University in the first round. The Women’s Championship Eight raced their first round against Durham, yet were beaten.
